National Achievements:
National champion in patterns and finalist in bamboo in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

World Achievement:
Bronze in bamboo cutting and open blackbelt patterns (University age) - 2012

Favourite Pattern and why:
Jangbaek 2, it's the perfect mix of quick, short and big, sweeping movements with elegant, flowing footwork. It really embodies the grace of Haidong Gumdo

What are you looking forward to most in Korea:
Catching up with some of the friends from previous years, as well as seeing where the art is at compared to 3 years ago. And the blackberry wine of course!

Why Haidong Gumdo:
After an ankle injury that prevented me from continuing with Taekwondo, Wolves Martial Arts started offering Haidong Gumdo at the perfect time. I looked it up online and found that it was a lot more dynamic than most of the Japanese styles of swordsmanship, and that really interested me, so I was there for the class and was hooked straight away.

Other martial art achievements:
2nd dan in WTF Taekwondo.

What is your spirit animal:
Obviously the wolf!

Favouite album:
I don't really have one, I tend to enjoy a bit from here and a bit from there...

What is your packing style - last minute or a month before:
Last minute. Luckily for me, Megan is all about lists and early preparation, so most of it is already done by then!

Favourite Pattern and why:
For training - Yedo 5. I think it is one of the first patterns that I've been taught that I immediately understood. It has a real frantic, yet controlled pacing and I enjoy just practising it when I get the chance. To teach I would say Ssangsu 9. I feel like all the ssangsu patterns lead up to this one. It has the most spins and fatigues you immediately. But when you are teaching and you see that moment where it all comes together it's awesome.

What are you looking forward to most in Korea?
Tteokbokki Town! No I'm looking forward to the competition. I competed in 2012 as a colour belt and it was a real eye opener to see the competition and really understand what I was actually doing. I'm also so excited to meet up with all the Haidong Gumdo family members I've connected with since the World Championships in 2012. Also shopping. I was ill prepared last time for how amazing the shopping was.

Why Haidong Gumdo?
Master Luke Adlam had started years before and I, being the dutiful loving ladyfriend came along to watch everything. Then I realised I could be doing it, I mean I was already there. That's like the major component to participation!

Other martial art achievements?
I am a chodanbo in Taekwondo, though I'm sure that's not much of an achievement. I've been working on it since I was in highschool

What is your spirit animal?
My spirit animal has the head of a cougar and the body of a falcon and when it opens it mouth thunder booms from it's jaws. Here's a picture I drew of it.

Favourite album:
Hands down all time favourite is Lazaretto by Jack White. Non stop repeat for a year.

What's your packing style - last minute or a month before?
It is a little more difficult packing for Haidong Gumdo because I need my uniform up until we leave. Also I pack light, but I'll definitely start making lists of things I need to start prepping and least important clothes i can pack by 10 July. There's a system.

Meeting new people that complete in this martial arts and seeing the demonstrations at a elite level.

Why Haidong Gumdo?
Why Gumdo? both of my kids trained in Tae Kwon Do and was asked to give it a go by their instructor and my neighbour and I decided to give it a go, he lasted 2 terms and I never looked back. I have done many sports over the years and Gumdo is the most dynamic exciting sport I have ever done.

National Achievements:
2013

  • Gold choreographed sparing
  • Silver individual patterns
  • Silver group patterns

2014

  • Bronze individual patterns

 Favourite pattern and why:

My favourite pattern is pattern 9. I love pattern 9 because of all the turns in the pattern. Pattern 9 is a very strong pattern which I love doing. Although pattern 9 consists of a cartwheel (which I can not do but working on for worlds) it’s still my favourite pattern.

What are you looking forward to most in Korea?
I am really looking forward to meeting heaps of new people and getting to know the people in my team more. I love new experiences and I’m sure this will be one of the best I have had. I am also really looking forward to competing and seeing the best in the world compete.

Why Haidong Gumdo?
I had been doing Taekwondo for 5 years prior to starting Haidong Gumdo. My dad started Haidong Gumdo a year before I did and it looked really good so I thought I would give it a  try. I love Gumdo and it is a really interesting and fun martial art. Every time I tell someone about it they have no idea what it is and I love that. I love doing something that’s so great and unique.

Other Martial Arts achievements:
I have been doing Taekwondo for 8 years now and I am training for my 3rd dan which I can go for in June this year. I am also an Assistant Instructor for my kids class on a Thursday night which I enjoy very much. Next year will be a big year for me as I will be grading for my 3rd Dan, doing my instructor course and completing year 12.

What is your spiritual animal?
I hope it’s a Tiger! I love Tigers.

Favourite album
I’m going to have to say Taylor Swift, 1989. I love Taylor Swift!!

What’s your packing style – last minute or a month before:
I love travelling and I love packing suitcases (don’t know why). I pack my suitcase as early as I can so at least a week before and before that I make a list.

Nepean Martial Arts to Korea - Meet Brian

  • PDF

Tuesday has come around and it's time for the next of our Meet the Team series with Instructor Brian McCabe!

National Achievements:
2012: 1st in patterns and paper cutting
2013: 1st in patterns, paper cutting, sparring and group patterns
2014: 1st in paper cutting, bamboo cutting, group patterns and 3rd in individual patterns

Favourite Pattern and why:
Patterns 8 and 10. Pattern 8 for the attacking sequence  across the hall, and Pattern 10 for the stalking and spinning into deep stances with single handed strikes.

What are you looking forward to most in Korea?:
I am looking forward to representing Australia with our fantastic team, a dream I have had for a very long time. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet, compete and work with other martial artists who have great talent and skills.

Why Haidong Gumdo?
With Karate I have practiced a few weapons including Sai, Bo, Nunchuku, and the sword has always fascinated me. I jumped at the chance to learn sword techniques when I found Haidong Gumdo close to home and have never regretted my choice. I love the attacking moves and the fluidity of the style.

Other martial art achievements:
I have been doing Karate for 33 years, and have recently graded 4th Dan. I have competed in many National and local tournaments, often very successfully.

What is your spirit animal?
The tiger.

Favourite album:
I like all types of music from Led Zeppelin to Deep Purple, Yes and Augie March. At the moment I am listening to Drew Johnston albums more than others.

What’s your packing style - last minute or a month before:
The night before, I am good at a mad rush at the end.
