Public School Sport Associations (PSSA)
Nepean
Wolves has been conducting school based Taekwondo sport programs in conjunction
with PSSA programs since 2005. During that time, classes have been conducted with
many primary schools in the Nepean area.
The programs are
designed for specific age groups and cover all levels from kindergarten to year
6 students. Many of the students participating in these classes are students
that are not interested in participating in a team sport but still want to be
challenged.
We are currently conducting
PSSA classes in the following schools:
· Oxley Park Public School
· Glenmore Park Public School
· Blackwell Public School
· Western Grammar School
Active After-school Communities Program
Background
The Australian
Sports Commission (ASC) is responsible for implementing the
Government's sports policy. It manages the Australian Institute of Sport, and
is the principle funding body for national sporting organisations. It has also
provided sports participation opportunities for school children through
programs such as Aussie Sport and the Active Australia School Network,
delivered through the States and Territories.
In June 2004, the then Prime Minister announced the Building a Healthy, Active Australia package
to address the issues of obesity and declining physical activity. A major
component of the package was the Active After-school Communities (AASC)
Program.
The AASC delivers
physical activity sessions for primary school aged children at sites after
school between 3.00pm and 5.30pm. The sessions are conducted in over 3,000
locations in metropolitan, rural, regional and remote communities in Australia.
The activities are designed to increase children's participation in structured
physical activity, to develop motor skills, and to promote a life-long love of
physical activity.
Nepean Wolves AASC Programs
Nepean Wolves Senior Instructor David Adlam became involved with the ASC
program in 2005 after completing the required training. Nepean Wolves is now
involved with the AASC programs in both primary school and Out of School Hours
(OOSH) communities and has recently been working in the following schools:
· Australian Islamic College of Sydney
· St Marys North Public School
· Oxley Park Public School
Initially started
as an 8 week program during a school term, the sessions are now based
on a 7 week cycle and start with the basics of Taekwondo working through
various stances and blocks to more difficult kicking and sparring techniques.
